#ThrivingInScienceWhileBlack: A New Framework for Understanding Black College Students Experiences with Thriving

Wed, April 8, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree Hall C

Abstract

This study explores what it means for Black undergraduate students to thrive in science. Using a phenomenological approach, sixteen thriving Black students majoring in science, from diverse institutions across the United States participated in interviews. Findings reveal that thriving involves more than academic success; it includes autonomy, purpose, introspection, and the power to transform and create supportive spaces within educational spaces. This work in progress builds on other asset-based frameworks, offering a new lens to understand the complexities of Black students' experiences with thriving in science.
