Abstract

This paper is the third part of my multimedia portfolio dissertation-in-progress which examines the impact of Black spaces on Black educational experiences. This paper develops theoretical frameworks and methodologies for this project. By integrating traditional oral interviews with visual storytelling, the project honors voice, embodiment, and community knowledge as forms of expertise. This paper also engages in resistance within academia by drawing on oral traditions and the documentary as a form of Art-Based Research (ABR) to explore concepts of Black Spaces and BASe. Through an innovative methodology that combines art-based research, documentary filmmaking, and critical phenomenology, this study explores the lived experiences of Black individuals within Black Spaces, thus amplifying Black individuals' roles as experts in their own experiences.
