Voices of the Unheard - Women Of Color Undergraduates Majoring In STEM

Sat, April 11, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree Hall C

Abstract

Women of color remain underrepresented in STEM undergraduate programs despite the field’s demand for diverse perspectives. This study uses endarkened feminist epistemology (EFE), the Listening Guide Method (LG), and semi-structured interviews to examine the lived experiences of women of color in STEM. This pilot study explores how race, gender, and stereotypes intersect with strategies of resilience, community, and identity formation. Findings highlight systemic barriers while also illuminating participants’ strengths, support networks, and liberatory practices that sustain persistence. By centering the narratives of women of color, the research reveals how institutional and cultural contexts shape belonging and mentorship access in STEM. This study aims to inform curriculum, broaden K–12 pathways, and guide equity-focused policies in STEM education.
