“Seeing a Way Out”: Studying Middle School Athletes’ Interest and Mentorship Toward STEM Careers

Sat, April 11, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree Hall C

Abstract

STEM jobs are projected to continue to grow, and it is imperative to consider how students’ interests and identities are supported to develop 21st-century skills (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023; Kay, 2009). Students’ interests and perceptions of STEM are essential factors in their decision to pursue a STEM career (Doerschuk et al., 2016; Maltese & Tai, 2011). This study seeks to offer students who are athletes a STEM experience that leverages their interest in sports to help them re-envision a career in STEM.
