The Role of Systemic Racism: How Educational Environments and Curriculum Impact Implicit Bias

Sun, April 12, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree Hall C

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to understand how increased exposure to systemic racism and the different approaches of educational curricula impact implicit bias. We will measure participants' exposure to systemic racism through demographic factors (e.g., socioeconomic diversity, ethnic diversity). Additionally, we will measure implicit bias, using a white/black race-related Implicit Association Test (IAT), preceding and following exposure to educational texts derived from California or Texas adopted textbooks. We are currently conducting a pilot study, which will aid our decision for which excerpts we will use in the main study. Prior to the AERA, we will complete data collection and analysis, and will be in the writing phase.
