Abstract

Communal Healing: Art as a Third Space for Love is an arts-based research project that explores how art functions as a "third space" to understand cultural and social meanings of love within Black American communities. The project investigates how artistic expression can both reflect and address historical tensions between love, faith, and trauma in Black communities. Drawing from bell hooks' critical frameworks on education as freedom work, the research asks: How might we utilize art education to create and sustain spaces dedicated to love and liberation?
