Environmental Racism and Educational Equity: A Working Paper on Combating Systems of Oppression

Sun, April 12, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree Hall C

Abstract

Environmental racism and educational equity are not isolated issues; they are indistinguishable. Rooted in structural and institutional racism, these systems exist to preserve power imbalances that limit advancement for BIPOC and socioeconomically challenged communities. This study draws attention to policy deficiencies and examines the interconnection of Critical Race Theory, Human Capital Theory, and Social Determinants of Learning. Drawing from the works of Bullard, Bryant, and Mohai, we demonstrate how disparities negatively impact health, education, and the overall quality of life. This effort seeks to elevate the voices of individuals in marginalized communities by partaking in forward-thinking strategies rooted in community involvement and restorative justice. The lens this provides is progressive and is grounded in justice and healing for historically marginalized communities.
