Supporting Teachers in their AI Adoption for Instructional Improvement: Lessons from the AmpifyGAIN AI R&D Center

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, Floor: 5th Floor, Hancock Park West

Abstract

This presentation reports findings from the IES-funded AmplifyGAIN AI R&D Center on how K–12 STEM teachers adopt generative AI (GenAI) and what supports they need. Using a national survey and interviews with math and science educators, the studies reveal widespread teacher interest but limited district-level policies or GenAI-focused professional development. These systemic gaps hinder adoption. Teachers who successfully integrate GenAI to expand student learning typically work in contexts with clear policies, leadership messaging, and structured professional learning. The session examines how district systems and collaboration shape equitable, effective GenAI use and offers strategies to help educators harness GenAI to enhance engagement, expand learning opportunities, and improve outcomes in STEM education.
