Recovering Early Histories of LA Latinx Teachers

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 403A

Abstract

Historian Laura Muñoz presents biographical and anecdotal evidence of Latinx teachers in LA’s public schools (1950s–70s), showing how they planted seeds for bilingual pedagogy long before policy formalization. Their dual-language pedagogies, curriculum design, and cultural organizing illuminate a precocious civil rights arc of educational utopianism.
