Abstract

This study examines how Black and Brown young adults reflect on the relationship between their high school learning experiences and their current political beliefs and participation. Drawing on follow-up survey and interview data from the Study of Deeper Learning, we explore how deeper learning competencies—such as critical thinking, collaboration, and self-awareness—shape students’ preparedness to navigate an increasingly polarized political landscape. Findings suggest that while many participants value political participation, they often lack opportunities to develop systems-level understandings, confidence engaging across difference, and pathways to action. Historicizing deeper learning through connections to the Black Panther Party's political education, this study builds on critical civic education pedagogies. Implications highlight the need for deeper learning pedagogies that explicitly engage political education and democratic participation.
