Abstract

The safety of Black queer youth in and beyond K-12 schools is affected by various factors, ranging from systemic racism to dynamics within Black communities. This dissertation centers Black queer young adult voices to learn about the broad and complex dynamics that affect safety for Black queer K-12 students. This poster provides an overview of the safety assets and challenges that Black queer young adults described regarding their childhood and teen years. I also provide a brief overview of participants’ freedom dreams of safer educational systems. Based on these findings, I provide implications for how schools, educators, and other stakeholders can make education systems safer for all Black queer and transgender students.
