Becoming a Fulbright Foreign Student: Narratives of Participants from Kazakhstan

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

For approximately two decades Kazakhstani students have had access to the Fulbright Foreign Student Program (FFSP). However, little is known about the FFSP applicants and their program application experiences. This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry design enhanced by the use of Obsidian to explore the experiences and capital forms FFSP participants from Kazakhstan have prior to and during the process of applying for the scholarship. Drawing on the tenets of Bourdieu’s capital theory and Yosso’s community cultural wealth model, this study sheds light on why prospective Fulbrighters from Kazakhstan apply for the program.
