Clustering Daily Routines with Image Processing: Revealing Behavioral Structures from EMA and Time Use Data

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

The study aims to characterize daily routines of toddlers and their families using data-driven methods that integrate information from ecological momentary assessments (EMA) and time use diaries (TUD). Traditional analyses of family media use often rely on global estimates, which fail to capture the dynamic structure of children’s daily experiences. By converting daily routines into image representations and applying hierarchical clustering, this study investigates whether distinct patterns of daily life, especially those related to childcare attendance and parental media use, can be uncovered. The overarching goal is to contribute scalable, reproducible tools for modeling naturalistic family media ecology.
