Science for Us: Engaging in Elementary Participatory Science for Community Change

Fri, April 10, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 404AB

Abstract

This current moment requires that we are explicit about what science is and who it is for. Still reeling from the effects of a global pandemic and attacks on Communities of Color vis-à-vis ongoing national policy changes, science itself is a justice endeavor. This disparity is most evident in the elementary grades. Considering the limited time devoted to science, we must try new approaches to its instruction. To this end, scholars have called for interdisciplinary science teaching for years, yet we see no changes. Science must be rooted in helping to understand and address issues within the community. This presentation takes up this charge. Throughout this talk, we will discuss current attempts to engage elementary students in participatory science.
