This study explores the academic and socio-emotional experiences of students enrolled in a high school in a rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program. Through thematic analysis of focus group interview data with current students and alumni (N = 14), we identified perceived program strengths and challenges, barriers to enrollment and retention, and ways to support IB students’ academic and socio-emotional well-being. While participants valued the program’s academic rigor and global focus, they also reported high levels of stress, feelings of social isolation/competition, and challenges with help-seeking/mental health. Findings underscore the importance of supporting high-achieving students’ socio-emotional needs and broadening narratives about IB’s benefits. By centering student and alumni voices, we offer recommendations for fostering inclusive, supportive IB learning environments.
