Abstract

Active listening is fundamental to effective collaborative problem solving, yet remains difficult to measure in small-group settings: traditional self-reports are prone to bias and often lose contextual details. We introduce a novel multimodal, microecological methodology that first identifies micro, meso, and macro collaboration contexts, through idea-evolution stages, idea connection and network metrics. Then we use these contexts to situate multimodal behaviors. Within each context, we align multimodal data streams (e.g. speech, gesture, and writing) to analyze listening behaviors. A case study of a student group tackling a design challenge demonstrates this method’s potential to provide holistic and context-aware measurements and shows its promise for designing feedback on active listening skills in small-group collaboration.
