Abstract

Students’ resilience has recently become a focus in educational research, especially regarding many marginalized populations in the US. While resilience manifestation discourse maintains mainstream focus, how Black male students demonstrate resilience is narrowly unknown. Few studies have specifically focused on this topic, but they often overlook the resilience strategies employed by Black male students. This review analyzes over 50 peer-reviewed studies published in the last three decades. The study thematically analyzes the data and identifies recurring patterns and concepts that enable these student manifestations of resilience. Findings revealed that self-advocacy, cultural grounding, and relationships are key. The study aims to broaden the scope of culturally responsive practices and restorative justice, emphasizing their crucial role in facilitating the demonstration of resilience.
