Exploring EFL Teachers’ Media Literacy in Kazakhstan (Stage 1, 4:17 PM)

Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Exhibit Hall A - Stage 1

Abstract

This session investigates the understanding and implementation of media literacy among EFL teachers in Kazakhstan across various educational contexts. Using a multiple case study design, the study analyzes classroom observation data and interview responses to uncover patterns in teachers’ media use, awareness, instructional integration, and the factors that inhibit media literacy development. Four key themes emerged: (1) policy guidelines, (2) school conditions and infrastructure, (3) limited professional development, and (4) school structure and culture. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how fostering media literacy can support the development of critical and reflective educators, as a universal pathway to empowerment that promotes democratic participation and social transformation across global educational contexts.
