Abstract

This study explores the multi-stage psychological help-seeking process among Chinese parents of primary and secondary school students. Based on grounded theory analysis of qualitative interviews, a five-stage model was developed: problem recognition, adaptation and adjustment, nearby help-seeking, professional help-seeking, and help-seeking maintenance. The model highlights the non-linear, culturally embedded, and emotionally dynamic nature of parental help-seeking, emphasizing the transition from emotional resistance to collaborative engagement. By addressing systemic barriers and family-level transformations, the findings contribute to more equitable, stage-based mental health support. This research responds to calls for culturally grounded models that reimagine care, equity, and access in school-family-community mental health systems.
