“What’s Next?”: Mentorship Through A Storytelling Card Game (Stage 2, 8:44 AM)

Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Exhibit Hall A - Stage 2

Abstract

Given challenges in belonging and pathways development for doctoral students, mentorship offers a potential way forward. We offer a design-based research pilot study arguing for novel and specifically more playful forms of doctoral student mentorship through a card-based learning game we designed called “What’s Next?”. Drawing upon playful learning through games, critical mentorship, and community cultural wealth frameworks, our design process and gameplay reflection revealed how structured invitations and vulnerability calibration illustrated possibilities for more expansive notions of mentorship. Through critical gameplay, we contribute an understanding of mentorship that unsettles legacy pathways, encourages different forms of personhood, and uplifts diverse forms of community cultural wealth, with implications for faculty, staff, programs, and universities.
