ChatGPT as a multilingual/multicultural tutor for adolescent and adult English learners (Stage 3, 8:17 AM)

Thu, April 9, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Exhibit Hall A - Stage 3

Abstract

ChatGPT exhibits strong language generation and translation capabilities. This research investigates the possibility that these multilingual abilities can be rallied in a translanguaging context where both the human user and large language model (LLM) can effectively use 2 languages in the context of a conversation to support English learners preparing for high-stakes language exams such as the New York State ELA Regents. Through a series of structured Spanish-English and Chinese-English trials, we find that ChatGPT can communicate effectively with 2 languages to support learners, when prompted to do so. ChatGPT struggled to generate culturally relevant examples, though. Multimodal (ASR and speech synthesis) creates more natural interactions between humans and LLM, but introduces specific problems with input that mixes 2 languages.
