The Reflective Compass: Transforming Global Learning Experiences into Future Innovative Practice (Stage 2, 2:44 PM)

Sun, April 12, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Exhibit Hall A - Stage 2

Abstract

Critical analysis and reflection are essential components of global service learning experiences. Indeed, there is consensus among researchers and practitioners that in order for these learning experiences to be effective, formal and structured opportunities for reflection must be provided. Furthermore, reflection and self-awareness are key to developing cultural awareness required for responsive global engagement. Therefore, the use of reflection was examined in a qualitative study identifying best practices in preparing Speech Language Pathologists for a global health experience. Results, analysis and summary of themes are described, with practical applications for incorporating reflection in student global engagement activities.
