Problematizing “Nice”: The NICCE Framework for Cultivating Critical Consciousness in Teacher Education (Stage 2, 12:53 PM)

Wed, April 8, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Exhibit Hall A - Stage 2

Abstract

This proposal introduces the Narrative Inquiry for Critical Consciousness in Education (NICCE) Framework, a multidimensional model designed to support teacher educators in preparing critically conscious preservice teachers. Integrating culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, critical race theory, and self-study, NICCE offers a structured, reflective, and action-oriented approach to addressing systemic inequities in teacher education. The framework responds to the urgent need for pedagogical tools that move beyond “uncomfortable conversations” and toward transformative praxis. By centering narrative inquiry and student agency, NICCE empowers educators and their students to interrogate beliefs, disrupt oppressive systems, and enact justice-oriented pedagogy.
