Misconceptions in the Mojave: Student Understanding Surrounding Complex Ecological Systems (Stage 2, 3:50 PM)

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Exhibit Hall A - Stage 2

Abstract

Misconceptions about desert ecosystems can lead to damaging environmental outcomes and policy regarding water, energy, and infrastructure development. This study sought to further understand early college learners’ conceptions of complex system processes occurring within a desert ecosystem, specifically the Mojave Desert located in the Southwestern United States. I utilized phenomenological semi-structured interviews to identify misconceptions that participants held regarding various ecosystem processes and functions within the Mojave. All participants (n=30) resided and worked within the boundaries of the Mojave. Preliminary analysis suggests that students harbor misconceptions related to ecosystem variable interactions, while struggling to overcome a novice, causal understanding of ecosystem processes. This work may contribute to the improvement of teaching complex ecological systems in early college educational settings.
