This study examined responses from 129 international students studying in the United
States on how trust, anxiety and self-efficacy shapes their dependency on Generative AI. Our
findings reveal that higher English writing self-efficacy is associated with greater reliance on
GenAI for academic tasks, a pattern that contrasts with the adoption of earlier technological
tools. Additionally, English anxiety was found to increase GenAI dependency, whereas general
anxiety was associated with reduced dependency. Trust also was a significant predictor of GenAI
use, further emphasizing its role in shaping students’ reliance on AI tools. International graduate
students have greater GenAI dependency compared to their undergraduate counterparts, although
both groups have similarly the same level of trust in GenAI for academic purposes.
