Abstract

In the United States, individuals who identify as more than one race has consistently increased since the year 2000 when the ability to choose more than one race was officially given as an option on the Census (Jones et al., 2021). Past models of identity development either excluded multiracial people, looked at them through a monoracial lens, or saw them as marginal people (Gabriel et al., 2023). Recent ecological models consider race as a social construction and each person is racialized in a different way and even members of the same multiracial family may racially identify themselves differently contextually. This study aims to explore the factors that multiracial people identify as influencing their racial identification.
