Abstract

Educational researchers agree about the need to integrate ethics into research on Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED). This systematic review examined interventions and frameworks from relevant studies published between 2021 and May 2025 (n = 53). Publications were analyzed across various settings, educational levels, learning outcomes, study designs, and locations. This study advances the understanding of AIED ethics by analyzing existing frameworks and approaches in interventionist, empirical research. Our findings suggest that while there is overall enthusiasm for ethics in AIED, published research mostly lacks clear definitions and explicit framing. Our analysis aims to stimulate discussions on ethics principles that shape decisions affecting education stakeholders, thereby contributing to the evolving landscape of AIED research and practice.
