Pre-service Teachers Learn Life Cycles through Augmented and Virtual Reality: A Case Study (Stage 2, 12:35 PM)

Sat, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Exhibit Hall A - Stage 2

Abstract

Life cycles is one of the core ideas (LS1) in the NGSS. The term cycle and the way it is depicted represents a “model” of an organism’s growth, reproduction, and death; hence, it is logical to use the modeling scientific practice to teach about life cycles. In this case study, we used augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) as digital modeling venues to support the understanding of the life cycle, the properties of different stages, and their ecological interactions. Accordingly, we report the implementation of an AR and VR modeling lesson on life cycles with pre-service teachers (PSTs) in an experiential learning course. We then provide recommendations for the affordances and challenges for this practice.
