Abstract

This research discusses the impact current mass deportation policies and anti-immigrant rhetoric are having on teachers and the students they teach. Latina/o immigrant families often live in intense fear and legal uncertainty due to heightened immigration policies, affecting the emotional well-being and academic outcomes of Latina/o/e students. Students’ fears and anxiety have become a powerful presence for teachers who bear the responsibility of caring for students. Using narrative inquiry as a methodology, this research examined the personal narratives of teachers, many who identity as Latina/o/e, on the overall impact these policies have on the unique role teachers play in negotiating political contexts as educators of immigrant students and their role in advancing compassionate and equitable practices.
