Capturing EM-Focused Instruction: Development and Validation of a Teaching Practices Inventory for Undergraduate Engineering Faculty (Stage 1, 1:50 PM)

Sun, April 12, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Exhibit Hall A - Stage 1

Abstract

This study addresses the lack of validated tools to assess teaching practices that promote Entrepreneurial Mindset (EM) in undergraduate engineering. EM refers to the ability to identify, evaluate, and act on opportunities while fostering creativity, adaptability, collaboration, and community engagement. Despite growing emphasis on EM in undergraduate engineering, no Teaching Practices Inventory (TPI) exists to systematically capture EM-focused instruction. To address this gap, we aligned Wieman and Gilbert’s (2014) TPI with the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) EM framework, which emphasizes curiosity, connections, and creating value. We refined items through think-aloud interviews with instructors across diverse engineering course contexts. The validated 30-item EM-TPI includes five sections: to help engineering instructors document, reflect on, and enhance their EM teaching practices.
