Abstract

Community schools, as democratic institutions, are uniquely positioned to help the public reimagine the potential of young people. At the RFK UCLA and Horace Mann UCLA Community Schools, in partnership with the UCLA Center for Community Schooling, students are co-leading research that redefines academic success through agency and civic engagement. Integrating Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) into AP Seminar and Research courses, students investigate issues shaping their lives and communities. Their projects explore college access, financial barriers, redlining, COVID-19’s mental health effects, the school-to-prison pipeline, and immigration policies. By conducting original research and sharing policy briefs with educators and partners, students advance a holistic vision of education centered on equity, community strength, and democratic participation.
