High school students in the First Ring Student Leadership Institute (FRSLI) investigated why fewer young people in Ohio are pursuing careers in education. Guided by Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) principles and working with Cleveland State University researchers, the team surveyed over 1,300 high school students statewide. Using descriptive and regression analyses, they found that interest in teaching is shaped most by students’ relationships with teachers, enjoyment of school, intrinsic motivation to help others, and knowledge of the profession. Career priorities such as salary or advancement mattered less. The team presented findings to state and district leaders, highlighting how positive school experiences and teacher-student connections can inspire the next generation of educators.
