Shaping spaces of relationality: Improvised music as a context for examining the heterogeneity of LOPI

Thu, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm PDT (2:15 to 3:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 515A

Abstract

In this poster, we draw on video of musical performances from a co-design project with 5 artists who work and participate in what is typically known as the “free jazz” world. Using LOPI we describe how the dynamic aspects of improvised music create a context where keenly attending to one’s collaborators (facet 5), coordinating via nonverbal cues (facet 6), and providing feedback (facet 7) that is sonic, embodied (eye contact, body turns), and affective (smiles, laughter) create spaces of relationality. Tracing how these relational spaces take shape during the moment-to-moment of performing and across performances, we demonstrate how the artists transform their participation (facet 4) in ways that broaden the relational landscape between both artists and audience members.
