A Model for Children’s Literacy Development Inspired in LOPI

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 515A

Abstract

This poster presents a model for children’s literacy development inspired on the LOPI paradigm. Mexican public schools often start by teaching reading and writing in a very technical way, focusing more on decoding symbols than on literacy as a vital meaningful everyday experience and practice. The sociocultural model for children’s literacy development I proposed, included the design and implementation of activities following the main principles of the LOPI facets. As children participated in culturally situated activities that were familiar and enjoyable to them, their literacy practices improved, and collateral effects were noted as it was the case of spontaneous help among the children and in some cases the development of social openness and agency.
