Critical Dialogues in Latinx Education

Sun, April 12, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 3rd Floor, Plaza II

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium critically engages with the complexities of Latinx education and Latinidad in schools. Panelists examine how Latinidad is shaped by and implicated in systems of racialization, anti-Blackness, settler colonialism, and representational politics. The session includes four presentations: (1) A practitioner inquiry reflecting on the politics of signifying “Latine/x” educational programming; (2) an ethnographic counter-reading of how Latinidad is constructed through Black spatial histories and refusals; (3) a case study of a K-12 interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies Program, which serves predominantly Central American students; and (4) a composite conversation on how education research shows Latinx is socially constructed and racialized. A Discussant offers commentary and future directions. The Chair facilitates audience dialogue on implications for educational research, practice, and justice.
