Session Type: Symposium
This symposium examines methodological innovations, challenges, and transformative possibilities of Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) with Asian American youth across diverse educational contexts. Drawing on critical theoretical frameworks and pedagogical approaches, presenters explore how YPAR methodologies can center the racialized civic knowledge and experiences of Asian American youth while navigating sociopolitical tensions. Through examining projects spanning virtual platforms, intergenerational oral histories, summer camps, and youth-led collectives, presentations demonstrate how these initiatives contribute to AERA 2026’s theme of “unforgetting histories and imagining futures” by challenging curriculum violence, combating anti-Asian racism, and fostering critical consciousness. The symposium advances understanding of participatory research methodologies with Asian American youth while offering nuanced insights into democratizing educational research and transforming K-12 pedagogical practices.
