Session Type: Symposium
In a time of rising mental health needs, social division, and educational pressure, school counselors (SCs) are uniquely positioned to support students and collaborate in building just and responsive school communities. This session explores how SCs can reimagine their role to center youth, moving beyond traditional service delivery models toward pedagogies that prioritize voice, power, and possibility. Drawing on frameworks spanning homeplace, Black Feminist Thought, and Action Research, this session will offer strategies for integrating student-led dialogue, leadership, and decision-making into school counseling programs. Participants will reflect on the difference between empowerment and shared power, examine barriers rooted in adultism, and leave with tools to create counseling spaces that affirm students as active agents in their growth, healing, and advocacy.
