Real insights from real classrooms: Motivation scholars’ experiences designing for and working with observational data

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Lobby Level, Beaudry B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Observational methods are valuable for understanding student motivation in context as they permit researchers direct insight into classroom situations giving rise to motivational beliefs. This enhances ecological validity, permits triangulation against other data sources, and reduces reliance on self-report measures. However, the question of how to plan for and analyze observational data lacks a clear-cut answer. Accordingly, this symposium spotlights high-quality observation research by motivation scholars with candid descriptions of approaches and challenges involved in working with this unique data type. Together, the presenters and discussant will enumerate a series of best practices for conducting classroom observation research that will be useful for scholars looking to incorporate or refine observational methods in their work.
