A Participatory Workshop on Metacognition and Reflective Practice in Design-Based Research

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Lobby Level, Santa Anita A

Session Type: Workshop

Abstract

Design-based methodologies, such as DBR and DBIR, are built on iteration, context, and collaboration. However, one thing that is often overlooked is our own personal reflective practice as researchers. This participatory workshop introduces metacognitive reflection as a practical, learnable skill that helps researchers make sense of their own thinking in the messy, in-between moments of design work. Using their own projects as a foundation, participants will engage in guided journaling, discussion protocols, and embodied reflection techniques. The session provides simple yet powerful tools to enhance reflexivity and insight, aiming to help researchers become more thoughtful, adaptable, and aware as they design in complex real-world settings.
