From Classmates to Friends: Understanding Peers’ Role in Student Motivation

Thu, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm PDT (2:15 to 3:45pm PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Level 2, Beverly

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Although peer relations in educational settings are central to students’ academic development, their role in students’ motivational beliefs remains understudied compared to other social factors. We therefore integrate diverse methodological perspectives addressing how peer recognition, mindset cues, network positions, and social interactions relate to students' motivational beliefs. Five studies from international samples employ qualitative interviews, experience sampling, social network analysis, and longitudinal modeling to illuminate the multifaceted ways in which peers shape motivation across educational levels from middle school through undergraduate STEM contexts. These papers build theoretical and methodological bridges to advance understanding of peer-motivational processes. A leading scholar in the field of motivation will critically discuss the findings and chart future research directions.
