Session Type: Symposium
Nowadays, youth encounter plenty of data across different settings, yet we know little about how these experiences shape their responses to social and community challenges. This symposium brings together four interdisciplinary projects that examine how youth use data within diverse contexts to understand and act on issues of equity, environment, and identity. Projects span rural Appalachia, Montana reservations, urban Philadelphia, and Micronesian territories, highlighting youth-created data products to investigate critical issues. Presenters explore how data engagement fosters critical literacy, civic imagination, and self-transcendence. Together, we aim to explore what lies beyond the stories of data and numbers. This session speaks to researchers and educators in data science education seeking to deepen data’s role in equity-driven inquiry and modeling.
