Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 301A

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium aims to: (1) introduce Kapwa as a foundational theoretical framework for understanding decolonial pedagogy for Filipinos and Filipino Americans; (2) examine practical applications of Kapwa across diverse educational contexts; and (3) investigate implications for creating more transformative decolonial educational research practices rooted in Indigenous Filipino epistemologies. The presentations provide a theoretical analysis of Kapwa and pakikipagkwentuhan based on existing empirical studies, tsismis as a critical epistemological tool grounded in Kapwa and Pakikipwagkwentuhan, an exploration role of Kapwa and pakikipagkwentuhan in analyzing Filipino and Filipino-American picture books and digital spaces, and a space for speculative discourse and re-imagination of Kapwa as a decolonial tool in computing and socio-technical designs.
