Session Type: Symposium
This symposium will explore how learner-centered, community-rooted models are reshaping postsecondary education in rural contexts. Three studies across distinct rural settings examine innovative approaches to supporting underserved learners. One presentation investigates how Tribal Colleges and Universities are integrating Indigenous caregiving values to better support student caregivers. Another shares findings from a rural Midwest initiative that creates pathways for multilingual paraprofessionals to become licensed teachers. A third presentation introduces a framework for mentorship tailored to rural community college students. Together, these presentations underscore the scholarly significance of centering rural cultures and community strengths in higher education. The session aligns with Rural Education SIG priorities by highlighting equity-driven strategies that empower rural learners and their communities.
