Anti-Racist Critical Perspectives Diversifying Special Education Research: Challenging Traditional Narratives of Objectivity, Neutrality, and Science

Sat, April 11, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 4th Floor, Diamond 3

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Traditional viewpoints toward research under the guise of empiricist science have dominated the field of Special Education, severely inhibiting transformative research on social justice. As a collective, we (a) critique how Special Education’s self-imposed narrow vision of research, especially its claims about “objectivity” and “neutrality,” are elevated above all other ways of knowing (Anastasiou et al., 2024) and (b) assert the value of critical perspectives in our field to diversify professional knowledge and support greater equity. Our panel applies two theories of DisCrit and QuantCrit to collectively explore the following question: How do anti-racist and critical perspectives challenge notions of objectivity, neutrality, and empiricist science within traditional Special Education research to advance justice-producing dispositions, knowledge, and skills in the field?
