Learning from Implementation Research: How Curriculum, Professional Learning, AI Tools and Classroom Studies Can Support AI-Literacy

Wed, April 8, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Lobby Level, Santa Barbara C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

As AI technologies reshape education, this symposium examines what students should learn about AI (AI literacy) and how AI tools influence learning. Grounded in implementation research (IR), we explore how curricular activity systems—professional learning, instructional materials, and classroom practice—support the adoption of AI-embedded, student-centered curricula. We position IR as essential to addressing the triple innovation challenge: teaching about AI, using AI tools, and shifting pedagogy. The symposium includes five papers address curriculum design, teacher learning, classroom use, and student outcomes. A discussant will synthesize themes and pose critical questions and engage the audience in small group discussions to consider how to scale AI innovations and what research is needed to guide responsible integration in schools.
