Competency-based assessment has emerged as a transformative approach in educational measurement, focusing on learners’ mastery of specific skills and competencies in addition to specialized knowledge. In this session, we will present the conceptual framework for the measurement of competencies, provide examples of how these transformations occur in law and the health professions, and conclude with an audience discussion on how to develop a research framework to support implementation and development of competency-based assessment that is adaptable, equitable, and scalable across diverse educational contexts.
