Teacher Identity Development: Expanding Conceptualizations to Account for Changing and Challenging Contexts

Sun, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Westin Bonaventure, Floor: Level 3, Avalon

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Teacher identity is central to understanding teachers’ instructional quality, motivation, and career choice. As teacher identity is dynamic and situated, it is shaped by and changes in response to educational contexts that are challenging and changing (e.g., teacher shortages, accountability demands, and anti-DEI legislation), which in turn influence teacher identity development. This symposium features six authors who will problematize, discuss, and reconceptualize the theoretical, methodological, and practical foundations of teacher identity research in relation to the evolving contexts. This symposium will bring together a diverse group of international scholars with varying perspectives on teacher identity and facilitate open discussions with the audience. It aims to stimulate critical questions and promote ongoing scholarly debates on teacher identity research.
