Abolitionist Experiments in Research: Enacting an Abolitionist Praxis in a National Study in Youth Prisons

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 309

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In this symposium, our research team reflects on a national research study in youth prisons, where we have collected over 500 surveys and 140 interviews of incarcerated youth across 8 states about their education journeys. The papers explore project foundations, data collection, qualitative data analysis, and quantitative data analysis and how the research team experimented with an abolitionist praxis in each. In it, we delve into the axiological and methodological complexities of an abolitionist praxis in carceral facilities, and how to keep youth voice at the center of our work. Ultimately, this session explores what is often left on the cutting room floor in articles–the messiness, power, and potential of enacting research while committing to an abolitionist praxis.
