Session Type: Symposium
Global Citizenship Education (GCE) emerged in the globalist age supported by the spread of democracy and the globalization zeitgeist. The Trump administration’s mercantilism and accompanying repressions question GCE’s future.
These multiple turns focus on the perceived needs of the conservative nation state seen as patriotism, loyalty and obedience. This symposium questions whether GCE can survive.
International scholars from the Global North and South share their insights and assess implications for GCE They will identify key issues and suggest future possibilities.
The results are varied. GCE is being taught alongside national citizenship values but also as a broad form of intercultural education. In some jurisdictions there has been a distinct turn away from GCE highlighting instead the importance of national values.
