Session Type: Symposium
This symposium discusses different perspectives that share the common goal of creating equitable mathematics experiences for elementary age students by engaging in partnerships with parents from culturally and linguistically rich underserved communities. We explore how funds of knowledge, epistemic authority, and the disruption of traditional power dynamics highlight culturally sustaining approaches that center on families lived experiences and intellectual resources. We examine unique ways parents and teachers collaborate to co-construct mathematics learning, including lesson study, trust-building, and critical reflections on school engagement. This symposium underscores the importance of reshaping the relationships that occur between home and school, paving the way for a more justice and equitable mathematics education for bilingual students.
